The Minerals Processing and Beneficiation Industries Association of Southern Africa

Advancing Mineral Beneficiation, Waste Recovery, Industrial Development

About MPBIASA

History & Founding

The Minerals Processing and Beneficiation Industries Association of Southern Africa (MPBIASA) was established around 2010 in response to South Africa’s need for more inclusive, locally driven industrialization in the mining and minerals value chain. The founding vision was to champion transformation in a historically exclusive sector and to facilitate a broad-based participation model —especially for emerging SMMEs and marginalised communities. Since its inception, MPBIASA has served as a vital industry body, enabling policy engagement, enterprise development, and stakeholder collaboration aimed at realizing the full economic and social value of mineral resources in the region. MPBIASA is a bona fide affiliate member of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), ensuring that the organisation is rooted in the

national business ecosystem and aligned with broader economic transformation agendas.

MPBIASA also serves as a strategic value addition partner supporting the growth of beneficiation and mineral waste management across Southern Africa. The association operates as a minerals industrialisation platform facilitating long term commercial collaboration between project developers, investors, technology partners, and regulatory rights holders involved in compliant mineral processing, waste recovery, and mine rehabilitation initiatives.

Through this platform approach, MPBIASA helps structure investable beneficiation, mineral waste recovery, and mine rehabilitation projects aligned with national industrial development priorities.

MPBIASA structures compliant beneficiation, mineral waste recovery, rehabilitation, and industrial revival initiatives through strategic collaboration between industry, government, communities, investors, and technical partners.

Mine closure and rehabilitation projects

The Rehabilitation & Resuscitation Programme (RRP) is MPBIASA’s flagship initiative—an integrated “cradle-to-grave” solution specifically tailored for the rehabilitation of abandoned, derelict, and legacy mine sites across Southern Africa. This holistic model aligns with national operations such as Vala Umgodi and Vula Umgodi, enabling both environmental restoration and inclusive economic renewal.

The RRP is built around two primary components:

These projects focus on restoring degraded mining landscapes through the strategic use of mineral by- products such as ash, slag material (ASM), waste rock, low-grade sweepings, and tailings—identified and secured in large volumes. Material is selected based on proximity between the source (e.g., dumps or stockpiles) and the destination (e.g., shafts, sinkholes, or excavations) to optimise logistics and impact.
